Can I have Sex after an Abortion?

After your abortion treatment has been carried out you will be able to return home as soon as possible. You will experience some vaginal bleeding after all abortion procedures and the risks of getting an infection are higher than normal. You will be sent home with an information leaflet that will tell you what to do and what not to do after having an abortion and you should follow this as best as you can.

After having an abortion you will be at your most fertile and so, if you decide to have sexual intercourse you should take precautions to prevent becoming pregnant again straight away. It is possible to become pregnant within a week of having an abortion although you are always recommended to avoid having sex until at least two weeks after having an abortion and always wait until the vaginal bleeding has stopped. This is very important to prevent getting an infection.
