Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane.

Rhinitis is usually caused by irritation from the inhalation of an allergen.  Symptoms include:

  • Congestion
  • Nasal discharge
  • Excessive sneezing
  • Swelling and redness

Rhinitis can also affect the eyes and throat, manifesting in watering eyes and a dry, ‘tickly’ throat.  In more extreme cases it can interfere with sleeping patterns, have a negative effect on appetite, and can cause feelings of depression.

Treatment is usually in the form of antihistamines or nasal sprays, sometimes including steroids.  It is important to identify what allergens cause your rhinitis; there will be different treatments that are more effective for particular individuals depending on their personal medical history.  In very severe cases, some surgical nasal procedures may improve extreme or unmanageable symptoms.
