Attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that occurs within children and is often characterised by short attention spans, hyperactive behaviour and impulsivity. However, it is also important that your child is not simply diagnosed with this disorder should they be suffering from a sleeping disorder too. A child’s symptoms of sleeping disorders may be quite similar to that of ADHD. Your child will most likely have decreased attention spans at school due to their fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness. They will also show signs of irritability, spontaneous outbursts and unpredictable mood swings. Equally, should your child be suffering from ADHD, a disrupted sleeping pattern may worsen their symptoms. Therefore, it is important that you monitor your child’s sleeping pattern and assess whether they are receiving the correct amount of sleep and for long periods at a time.
