Clinic details: Tunbridge Wells is home to the South East Fertility Centre and located in the western end of Kent. More properly known as Royal Tunbridge Wells, the city is by the border of nearby East Essex. It has the aesthetic of a Georgian Spa, which is what the city began as so many years ago. In many ways Tunbridge Wells is ideally placed for an institution like the South East Fertility Centre to cater to the region it is named after. Surgical sperm retrieval through percutaneous epididymal and testicular sperm aspiration is conducted for men who suffer from azoospermia, a condition where sperm is absent from ejaculate. Counselling and translator services are there to provide support in those fields, addressing the emotional needs of patients suffering from infertility. Both private and NHS funded patients are able to receive treatment from the South East Fertility Centre, and while many other centres place an upper limit on the age of patients receiving treatment, the South East Fertility Centre aims to provide a complete range of care services for patients up to and over the age of 44. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is provided with and without ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection - where one sperm cell is selected and injected straight into an egg cell). IVF is also provided in mild and natural forms, to give patients as many different options as possible. Mild and natural IVF are slightly different versions of IVF that basically use low doses (mild) of fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation for eggs for the treatment, or none at all (natural). Some patients can respond badly to the fertility drugs used to induce ovulation, while others may not be comfortable with using drugs to this end, and so having options ensures that the doctors and other professionals at the South East Fertility Centre can make sure that treatments are adjusted and tailored to you as a unique individual. Similarly the option of fertility drugs is part of artificial insemination treatments. IVF can be performed at the centre with blastocyst transfer, a method which cultures embryos for 5 days, up until it reaches the blastocyst stage, before it is transferred into the womb. This method leads to many more successful pregnancies than traditional IVF, where an embryo would be transferred about 3 days after fertilisation. It is thought that the reason for this is that only healthier embryos make it as far as the blastocyst stage, and hence blastocysts transferred into the womb have a better chance of making it to full term. Other treatments made available include post coital testing, ovulation monitoring, and sperm assessment as methods of investigating the causes of infertility. The Centre provides a storage option for patients who have surplus eggs or sperm, but also for cancer patients about to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy, either of which has the potential of severely damaging fertility.

Fertility treatment at this clinic: Facing the prospect of infertility is an unpleasant experience to say the least. Many of us take the ability to have children in the future for granted, and so it comes as quite a surprise to many that as many as one in six couples will in fact have difficulty in conceiving a child at some point in their lives. The complex nature of infertility means that caring for the condition requires expertise in a field that is constantly moving forwards in terms of both treatments and our understanding of the reproductive system. The South East Fertility Clinic SEFC can provide a centre for treatment in which this level of expertise can be delivered, helping to relieve some of the tension and stress that comes with infertility with the knowledge that you are in the best of hands. The SEFC's clinic can be found on Queen's Road in the stately Amberley House, and can take you through every step of the way, from early investigations into exactly what is going on in you and your partner's bodies, right through to a successful treatment and pregnancy. Between them, the staff at the centre can boast an amazing 70 years' worth of experience in a field, and your treatment will be consultant led by experts in the field, supported by able nursing and scientific. You can arrange appointments easily through the clinic's patient liaison officer, who will help sort out the referral and information needed from your GP or specialist. Care is provided for both your physical and mental needs, with support available at every stage should you need it. Some of the decisions made around infertility treatments can be big ones, and for these a dedicated counselling service can be invaluable in helping you make a balanced, informed decision that is right for you.
