Located in County Durham, Sunderland is a city in the North East lying by the River Wear. Sunderland's NHS Trust operates an acute and maternity care centre, The Sunderland Royal Hospital, wherein artificial insemination is provided as an assisted reproductive technology. The method used is known as intrauterine insemination, which involve taking a sperm sample from a male partner or donor and placing it within the uterus where it has a chance of fertilising an egg and leading to a successful pregnancy. Treatments are available for both NHS and private patients, and abides by the guidelines placed by the local PCT (primary care trust) which indicates that patients with a BMI under 30 and under the age of 42 can receive as many as 6 cycles of IUI at the Sunderland Fertility Centre.
