Abortion & Pregnancy Help

You can find help and advice about a range of pregnancy related issues from abortion to adoption to disabilities.

Help for the under 25’s

If you are under 25 you can contact the Brook Advisory Service.  The Brook Centres offer young people confidential help and advice on all sexual health related issues.  This covers STIs, pregnancy, abortion and contraception.

It is a registered charity with many years experience in providing a comprehensive service to young people.  They have specially trained people working with them such as doctors, nurses, counsellors, and outreach and information workers.   They have centres throughout the UK and Northern Ireland and can be contacted via telephone, text, email and in person at one of their centres.

Help for Everyone

The Family Planning Association is a registered charity that specialises in all aspects of sexual health, relationships and sex.  You can find Family Planning Clinics across the UK and Northern Ireland where you can drop in to speak with a trained professional in person or you can contact one of their helpline phone numbers.  The clinics helplines tend to be open during office hours only.

Your GP

Your GP, in many cases, is the first place to start as many women are referred to an abortion clinic for NHS treatment by their GP.  You would contact your GPs surgery for an appointment and you will be able to discuss your circumstances then.  It may be that they will refer you direct to an abortion clinic who can offer you specialised counselling to help you assess all your options. Alternatively, you can contact a private clinic directly and refer yourself. You can also make an NHS appointment at an abortion clinic yourself without needing to see your GP.

Private Abortion Clinics

You might contact a private abortion clinic directly from the first instance if you do not want to go to your GP or if you want an appointment quicker (instead of having to wait for a NHS referral).  You will be given an initial consultation and offered professional counselling. Although you will have to pay for the procedure, many women feel more comfortable going there than through their GP.

There are many private clinics around the UK but the main ones are The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), Marie Stopes International and Spire Healthcare.  Sometimes your local NHS will pay for you to have an abortion at a private clinic and hence, these clinics may offer both private and NHS abortions.
