Gastric Band (Lap Band) Surgeons

It is important to take the time to select the right surgeon for you.  Your aim may be to find the most experienced surgeon in lap band surgery.  These surgeons can be found in NHS hospitals and working in private hospitals and clinics.  There are databases and websites that can help you when you are researching surgeons so do put those to good use.  Always try and around a consultation with the surgeon at an early stage so you can meet and ask all the questions you need to.  Many patients do research on surgeons by joining weight loss surgery communities on the Internet in the form of forums and chat rooms.  They can be a good source of gaining information about a hospital or clinic or surgeon.  However it is best to try and get as much information from as many different sources as possible rather than relying on just one recommendation.

Finding a Surgeon

Word of mouth, personal recommendation and GP referral are the most common ways weight loss surgery patients find out about surgeons.  It is important that you feel completely comfortable with your chosen surgeon.  Once you have reached the stage of consultation you will probably have got a feel for your surgeon and hopefully established a good relationship.

Your surgeon should be able to give you a clear understanding of the procedure in some detail, an idea of how much time you will spend in hospital, the recovery period and the likely results.  You should also discuss what aftercare will be needed, time off work, what support you may need post surgery, recovery times, dietary needs post surgery, risks of surgery.  The consultation is the time to ask lots of questions, however you should be able to make repeat visits to talk to your surgeons as queries arise so that they can be addressed.  Do not be shy about asking what the surgeon’s success rate is in lap band surgery.
