After Colonic Irrigation

As soon as the colonic irrigation has been completed, you should go to the toilet to ensure that all excess waste is removed from the colon. Once you have emptied your bowel, you will get the chance to discuss the treatment with your therapist and determine a diet plan to allow you to reap the most benefits.

So long as the treatment was performed correctly and there were no complications, you are able to go immediately back into your normal daily routine without any discomfort. However, if after the treatment you do notice something abnormal, you should seek professional advice from the therapist or you GP as soon as possible.

Despite feeling normal and being able to enter back into your day-to-day life, there are numerous pieces of advice that should be followed as best you can to avoid any possible side effects and to gain the optimum results.

  • If your therapist gave you advice on diet and lifestyle, you should follow it as they only tell you this information for your value and it can aid the colonic irrigation benefits.
  • You may be told to drink up to 2 litres of water each day to prevent any dehydration.
  • Try and stick to a healthy diet with a lot of fruit and leafy vegetables as well as fibre. This will help soften stools and encourage regular bowel movements.
  • If possible, avoid consuming red meat on a daily basis, as it is harder for your body to digest that fish, vegetarian products and white meat.
  • Aim to replace refined grains, such as white flour and pasta, with whole grains, such as wholemeal flour and pasta as the refined products can form unnecessary mucous.
  • Dairy products, including eggs, also form mucous and therefore you should try and avoid eating too many of these types of foods
  • Avoid drinking alcohol for two days after the colonic irrigation treatment, as you will probably be experiencing more urination as it is and alcohol will just dehydrate you further. This can cause several issues, such as headaches and faintness.
  • If you experience gas and stomach rumbling over the two days following the procedure, it is normally due to the good bacteria in the bowel growing and dividing to replace those that were removed. This is usually nothing to be concerned able and to ease these side effects, you could each more probiotic foods (or take supplements).
  • Steer clear from exercising too vigorously for the 24 hour period after colonic irrigation, this includes weight lifting.
