Liposuction is a cosmetic operation designed to aesthetically remove fat from all areas of the body. However it is not intended as a weight loss solution; there is a plethora of health issues, including diet and fitness, which cannot be solved by simply having the fat surgically removed. Furthermore excessive amounts of fat being removed in a single operation can be highly dangerous. It is generally advisable for the patient to combine liposuction with some form of exercise regime and dedication to healthy eating, so that the effects are as great as possible on the patient’s body and his or her self-confidence.

Procedure

The patient is first given either general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation. Formerly most liposuction operations were performed ‘dry’, but a modern surgeon will use ‘wet’ liposuction – this means that a small amount of fluid, less than the amount of fat which is removed will be injected in order to maintain some balance in the body and minimise bleeding. The surgeon makes a small incision and then inserts the cannula – a hollow tube – through which the fat is sucked out by a machine known as an aspirator. The wound is then stitched up or closed by dissolvable suture. The procedure generally takes between one and two hours. Patients are advised to attempt no lifting for several days after and are fitted with a support garment for between two and four weeks.

Vaser Liposuction on Harley Street

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) liposuction is a minimally invasion procedure designed as an alternative to surgical liposuction. It works by transmitting ultrasound energy to the targeted areas of fat, breaking down these fatty tissues. The resultant liquefied fat is then removed by suction. VASER is extremely accurate and can readily distinguish between the fat cells to be liquefied and other tissues. The patient is given local anaesthetic before treatment.

Risks

Infection is a possible risk of liposuction but this should be prevented by seeing a competent surgeon. More serious potential problems include damage to internal organs and to the skin and nervous system. This makes it crucial to fully consult the surgeon about the right amount of fat to remove, and ensure that the operation will be performed reliably. There is also the potential for fluid accumulation if the wet liposuction is not entirely successful, which will cause problems unless the fluid is immediately drained. VASER is a less risky process. Its accuracy ensures that non-targeted tissues are not damaged and there is far less scarring and bruising post-operation. Furthermore it tightens skin, reducing the risk of sagging skin present in surgical liposuction.

Advantages of Harley Street liposuction

Harley Street’s high standards help eliminate the vast majority of risks of liposuction. Furthermore the surgeons will be sure to inform the patient of any potential risks for each individual operation. As with other cosmetic procedures at Harley Street, a counsellor may be provided for the patient to ensure peace of mind and that a safe and productive line of communication is adopted between the surgeon and patient. This will also allow the surgeon to take factors such as the patient’s smoking habits into account and advice the individual about how best to prepare for the upcoming operation in order to diminish the risks. Furthermore Harley Street clinics offer laser lipo – this involves firing a laser down the cannula to heat and break down fat cells. It is generally more effective for specific rather than general areas of fat – ‘problem’ areas – but in these cases it is typically more successful than regular liposuction.
