Menopause increases your risk of panic attacks because panic attacks can be caused by fluctuating hormone levels. Panic attacks can last from seconds to several minutes and they can come on very quickly; when you have a panic attack, you feel incredibly anxious and this is usually accompanied by physical signs, such as a racing heartbeat, sweating, dry mouth, shaking and breathing very quickly.

There are many factors, which can trigger a panic attack and one of these is menopause; the hormonal changes, which take place during menopause, affect mental health and it can make women more prone to anxiety; in severe cases, anxiety can escalate to panic attacks.

Treating panic attacks

If you have frequent panic attacks, you should consult your doctor. There are some self-help treatments, which may be beneficial, such as exercising, employing stress management techniques, getting enough sleep and eating well; it's also a good idea to avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can trigger panic attacks.
