The recovery period for fat transfer breast augmentation is relatively short. The exact recovery period will vary from person to person. It is dependent on a number of factors such as your health, lifestyle and genetics.

The appearance of the breasts after the procedure also varies with each individual. Where you have your fat transferred will depend on your specific case. It can be used to create fullness in certain areas on the breasts or used to create larger breasts all over. Your fat transfer breast augmentation will increase the overall size of your breasts but leave them looking natural.

For your recovery, you must first and foremost follow all of the post-operative instructions that your surgeon provides you with. This is important to ensure that your recovery process is as fast as possible and minimise the risk of any complications.

Discomfort

As with any surgery, it is normal to experience some pain once the anaesthesia wears off. This is because your body is recovering. Your surgeon or nurse may provide you with painkillers to combat this pain and ease your recovery. It is important to keep on top of your medication as this can speed up the recovery process. If you are worried about pain from your fat transfer breast augmentation, be sure to get in touch with your surgeon and they will let you know whether you need to be taking pain killers. Fat transfer breast augmentation only requires small incisions and so you will be looking at a relatively pain-free recovery. However, this varies from person to person so you should get in touch with the clinic if you are experiencing severe pain.

You may also see some bruising, swelling and your breast may feel tender. In most cases, this will subside as your body recovers. They are natural responses to the surgery. In some cases, the breasts appear larger than what you'd hoped for but this is often due to inflammation and will settle. If any of these symptoms prevail, it could be a sign of fat necrosis (where the fat cells that have been transferred to your breasts die). If you are worried about this, talk to your surgeon and they can offer you a simple procedure to cure this.

Activities

You can expect to be able to go back to work from as early as 2 days after the procedure. For more strenuous jobs, however, it is best to wait a week before going back to work. The injections are small so the skin heals quickly which means that your body will not need as long to recover. It is important to keep in mind, however, that if you do not feel ready to resume your normal daily routine, you should take some extra down time. After around 7 days you can then take off the dressing. From 4 weeks after your breast augmentation, you should be able to engage in more physical activity. This includes swimming, running, weightlifting and other sports that you normally enjoy. Many women like this about fat transfer breast augmentation. It means that if you are sporty and like to keep in shape, you will not be too restricted. However, it is still important to ease yourself into this. Your body could still be recovering so be prepared to slow down and take the pressure off yourself when you jump back in.

What to wear

You may be recommended to wear a compression bra or bandage for a few weeks whilst you recover. Some swelling and bruising may come up so it is a good idea to use a compression garment to take some pressure off the body and support your breasts whilst they recover. You can wear this during the day and whilst you sleep to assist your body. The swelling and bruising should pass within a few weeks. If it remains for longer than this, be sure to get in touch with your surgeon. They will check for any complications that may have occurred and provide solutions to resolve these. You should avoid compressing your breasts in any other way whilst they recover. This is because the fat cells will need to integrate into the tissue so it is best to avoid sleeping on your back for a few weeks after your surgery.

The final outcome

Your breasts will settle in the shape they will stay in after 6 months. At this point the fat within the breasts has incorporated into the breast tissue and any fat the the body is going to reabsorb has been reabsorbed. This is not to say that your breasts won't change shape at all after this period of time. Like all breasts, it is natural for them to undergo changes to shape but by 6 months, your body should not be responding to the fat that you've had transferred to your breasts. However, keeping healthy can help maintain youthful breasts. Quitting smoking, having a healthy diet, exercising and staying hydrated will help this and ensure that you are left with fresh looking breasts for life.

One of the great things about fat transfer for breast augmentation is that you will not need to have the fat replaced or taken out: you only need to undergo one procedure in your lifetime. The final outcome for your breasts is long lasting and ideal if you don't want to keep up with any maintenance.
