Adrenaline

This is the main hormone released by the body in the flight or fight response. Increased levels in the body will cause the heart to beat faster, increase the size of the airways and blood vessels so that oxygen and biological chemicals can get around the body much quicker. It is produced in the adrenal gland, which is located on the top part of the kidney. For those who suffer from a severe allergic response to a particular allergen (such as shellfish or peanuts) adrenaline is often carried around in the form of an epi pen. Epi pens are a single emergency dose of adrenaline which can be administered upon the accidental ingestion of a life threatening allergen. It will keep the body from sinking into anaphylactic shock long enough for the emergency services to arrive and administer proper treatment.
