What to Expect During a Dermal Filler Treatment for Acne Scars

The exact process of dermal filling may vary slightly depending on where you receive treatment and the practitioner who performs it. In general terms you can expect to go through the following.

Firstly, your practitioner should explain to you exactly how the procedure will work and what to expect. They will also ensure that you are fit to undergo the treatment on this particular day. You should then be told about the results that the practitioner thinks they will achieve and be questioned about your expectations of the process. This step ensures that your hopes are realistic and that you will not be disappointed. If you have any queries or questions at this point make sure you ask them. If you are not comfortable with the procedure you can stop it at any point.

Assuming everything is as it should be, you will then be shown to the chair in which the treatment is to be performed. The scarred area which you are having filled will then be numbed by a local anaesthetic. The local anaesthetic will come in the form of a cream or a wipe. As soon as your skin is numbed, your practitioner will insert a needle into the correct area and inject your skin with the filler you previously decided upon. Once your practitioner is happy with the visible result, the needle will be removed. This process will take place for each scar you are having treated.

Immediately after the dermal filler treatment, your practitioner will be able to show you the effect. Your skin may be numb for a little while after but this should quickly wear off. Once it does you may experience some pain, bruising, reddening and swelling though this is not usually severe. You will be told how to care for the area as it heals and instructed to keep your face as still as possible for the next 12 hours. If the practitioner is happy with the procedure and your recovery you will be sent home as soon as the procedures, which insure you are well enough to leave, are complete.
