Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are two main categories that can cause erectile dysfunction. However some medical experts argue that it is often a mixture of the two that cause the majority of erective problems. The categories are physical causes and psychological causes.

Psychological Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are many psychological problems that can cause erectile problems such as stress and depression. These problems can decrease your interest in having sex and decrease your libido. This then makes it much harder for your brain to be able to trigger an erection. Extreme changes in the hormonal levels within your body can also have an effect on your erections as a change in hormone levels can make it harder for your body to have and then maintain an erection. Anxiety is another common problem that affects erections and this problem can occur when you have perhaps had a bad experience with erectile dysfunction previously and therefore you may then become paranoid that it will happen again. This problem is more commonly known as ‘performance anxiety.’

Another common psychological problem is that the erective dysfunctions are caused by problems within the relationship that are not necessarily sexual. This problem often occurs when there has been a breakdown in communication or there has been a lack of a sex life for a long period of time.

Physical causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are four main medical conditions that are responsible for erectile dysfunction. The first is vasculogenic which is where the blood flow to your penis is affected and this is commonly caused by heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. The second medical condition is neurogenic which is when your nervous system is affected and you may suffer from conditions such as MS (multiple sclerosis), Parkinson’s disease or tumours. The third condition is a hormonal one which affects the hormone levels within your body and this could mean you could have conditions such as an over-active or under-active thyroid. The last main medical condition is anatomical and this refers to the factors that could affect the structure of the penis like Peyronie’s disease and hypospadias.

Other factors that cause Erectile Dysfunction

There are other factors that could be causing your erectile dysfunction and many of these are self inflicted and are easy to stop. They include causes such as smoking, consuming more than the recommend intake of alcohol, the use of recreational drugs and carrying extra weight. All of these things should be considered before looking into medical help as you could help your condition without any medical help.
