Plymouth is probably the largest and most well-known city in the South West peninsula, with a naval history that features many exploratory and military exploits. The city retains a busy commercial and military port, as well as a striking view of the sea from a beautifully built and structured centre that makes full use of the city's coastal location. The clinic performs many different assisted conception procedures. In 2009 203 cycles were performed of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and 171 cycles of ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection). These procedures are well known and are very effective in delivering pregnancies where a couple has been struggling to conceive for 2-3 years. Another set of methods referred to as artificial insemination can be provided by the hospital, including intra-uterine insemination (IUI), of which 45 cycles were performed, and donor insemination (11 cycles). All of these treatments are monitored by the HFEA (Human Fertility and Embryology Authority), and reported on to provide people interested in treatments at such centres with the information needed to make a decision. The Centre has held an HFEA license since 1998 and last had its license renewed in 2011, meaning that its performance and standards all abide by the most stringent of national standards. IVF and ICSI success rates from the centre are in line with a national average reported by the HFEA, and the hospital operates aSatellite centre further away in Truro to be able to provide its services to as broad a community as possible.
