Why is Laser Eye Surgery so expensive?

Laser eye surgery has been being performed since 1992 and has come a long way since then. It started life as PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), which involved removing the front covering of the cornea called the epithelium before it could be reshaped with a laser. The operation has evolved over the years, now involving eye scans, new lasers and a host of new technology to ensure you get the best results possible. All these new technological and surgical advances mean that the equipment is expensive. This is in part why surgery can cost so much. Don’t forget, you are also paying for the expertise of your surgeon, who will have trained for over 15 years!  Often, laser eye clinics also include aftercare in the price of the operation, which gives you a period after your operation when all the treatment you need is free. This will include consultations with your ophthalmologist (which usually cost in the region of £120) and 24 hour emergency care.

When you begin to add up all the bits that are included in your procedure and aftercare, the price that you pay seems better and better!
