It is unlikely that you will experience any side effects due to a microdermabrasion treatment, although there are some small issues that can arise.  You are unlikely to need any medication attention due to these small problems, however if anything unusual develops or the side effects persist you would be wise to ask the advice of your doctor or dermatologist.

  • Sensitive skin.  Immediately post-treatment you may find that your skin is slightly sore and may react more readily to creams, the elements or clothing.  This is due to the exposure of new, young skin.  This is the most common reaction to microdermabrasion, and will slowly fade after around a day.
  • Changes in skin colour.
  • Sore and red skin
  • Dry skin.  This might not happen straight after your treatment but is more likely to develop within the following few days.  There are measures that you can take to help your skin recover, such as using moisturisers and avoiding sunlight that will better able your skin to absorb and retain moisture.
  • Acne sufferers may find that their skin appears to worsen after the microdermabrasion, and more spots appear.  This is a normal reaction, and will calm down after a few days time.  You could almost think of it as getting rid of the spots in one go, leaving your skin clearer than before.

Helping your skin after Microdermabrasion

There are things that you can do which will help your skin to heal faster after microdermabrasion treatment.  The most important thing that you can do is to stay away from direct sunlight and make sure that you are fully protected against U.V. rays.  Wearing a hat and using suncream are good ways to prevent any burning to the face and to allow your skin to recover in the best way possible.  Using an effective moisturiser will quicken the pace of your recovery and promote healthy skin production.
