Cosmetic Dentistry in India

Cosmetic dentistry is a booming part of the Indian healthcare industry. As Indian dental clinics combine extremely low prices with extremely high levels of treatment, this is hardly surprising. In many cases it can be well argued that nowhere else in the world can you get such a balance between cost and quality of cosmetic dentistry as in India. Certainly prices compare extraordinarily well with those for the same treatments that you would be looking at in the UK, and you may well find yourself wanting to join the ever-increasing number of patients from the UK looking to India to serve their cosmetic dental needs.

Tooth whitening in India

There is a plethora of different reasons why your teeth can become discoloured, from drinking beverages such as tea or coffee to smoking to simply aging. Discoloured teeth fall short of the generally accepted aesthetic appearance of all-white teeth, and this fact can lead to a lack in self-confidence and reluctance to smile in anyone whose teeth are stained or otherwise tarnished. Fortunately there are a number of dental treatments available today which are specifically aimed at countering discolouration and leaving the teeth visually whiter and more aesthetically pleasing. Indian clinics are at the forefront of tooth whitening technology and know-how, and can provide some of the most reliable and effective treatments specifically for your discolouration.

The most common method of tooth whitening involves tooth bleaching. As the name suggests, this essentially involves bleaching the teeth, using a peroxide-based agent (usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). There are a number of different ways to actually do this, depending on the clinic and your particular set of teeth, but ultimately the idea is the same – your gums are protected by a rubber shield or a gel, and then the bleaching agent is applied to your teeth.  The bleach then gradually spreads out throughout the teeth. Typically you will need several appointments at your Indian dentist, and may have to continue the bleaching process in your accommodation, but of course you will be able to arrange this in discussion with the clinic. This is an extremely cheap process in India, but it is not overly expensive in the UK, so you may not be able to fit flights and accommodation into the price difference.

Laser tooth whitening is a cutting-edge treatment, and can be one of the advantages of going to India for tooth whitening. Although it is more expensive than tooth bleaching, there are several benefits to undergoing this procedure. The principle is much the same as tooth bleaching: the peroxide bleach, or in some cases a gel, is first applied to the teeth. However instead of the usual lengthy process of appointments and maintenance at home, a laser is now used to rapidly expedite the spread of the bleach or gel. Again your gums are protected throughout by a gel or a shield. This procedure can be completed in about an hour, leaving you almost immediately with teeth which can be many shades whiter.

Once you have had a tooth whitening procedure, you might experience slight irritation around your gums for the first few days. This should not persist however. Other risks are negligible, though if the irritation does continue, or you notice anything else amiss, you should absolutely not hesitate to get in touch with your Indian dentist or, if you have returned home, your UK dentist.

Porcelain veneers in India

One of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments worldwide, porcelain veneers are an excellent way to deal with stained, damaged, crooked or otherwise non-aesthetic teeth. They can be used for a wide range of problems so be sure to consult your dentist if you think you might be a candidate. Veneers are essentially wafer-thin shells made out of porcelain (chosen for its close resemblance to teeth, and its durability) which are fitted over your teeth to give the appearance of full, healthy and aesthetic white teeth. They are extremely resistant to subsequent staining and other forms of discolouration, so once they are in place, and provided you maintain them well enough, they will remain in good condition for as long as they last. Indian clinics offer extremely cheap veneers compared to the vast majority of countries in the world, and have a reputation for excellent success rates. The procedure is typically very similar to that found in the UK or Europe.
