A ‘smile makeover’ is a term coined to describe cosmetic dental procedure(s) that are used to achieve your perfect smile. Many people are not confident when they smile and feel that their teeth are one of the first things others notice. Your smile is not something you should be embarrassed about, and is often one of the quickest and easiest cosmetic procedures to have. If you feel confident about your smile, it makes for a much more confident you.

Common Smile Makeover Problems:

Some of the most common smile makeover problems are:

Replacing Missing Teeth

If you have any teeth missing, you may become very self-conscious of this or it could cause you problems with speech, eating and cause discomfort. Therefore, within a cosmetic smile makeover you can have a dental implant, a dental bridge or a partial denture. You needn’t worry about the tooth/teeth looking odd next to your natural teeth, as the same colour can be achieved as well as made to measure fitting.

Straightening your Teeth

For many of us, we do not have perfectly aligned teeth, and whilst it is a common problem in children, it is also a common issue for many people who feel they are beyond the age where they can wear a brace. You may find that you have gaps in your teeth, they are crooked or overlap – but these are all easy to correct, and with discreet methods, and at any age If you wish to have your natural teeth straightened, then there is an invisalign brace, which is a clear covering of the teeth that will re-align them much like a normal brace. A faster solution to this problem is maybe to have dental veneers fitted.

Chipped Teeth

Teeth can be easily chipped, particularly if you play contact sports. Treatments will vary slightly depending on the extent of the damage caused to your tooth, but there are many treatments available. The most common solutions to this type of damage to teeth are; veneers for chipped teeth, a dental crowns or cosmetic bonding

A “Gummy Smile”

If you feel that you show too much gum when you smile, there is a surgical and laser treatment available that changes the contours of your gums. You should consult your dentist regarding the risks and implications of such a surgery.

Stained Teeth

If you feel your teeth are discoloured, which is unfortunately a very natural occurrence from the food and drink we consume, there are various tooth whitening techniques available. There are home tooth whitening kits for this purpose, but you should again consult your dentist to ensure you will not be causing any more damage to your teeth. Equally, veneers can be fitted to create a dazzlingly white smile.

Unsightly Fillings

You may have had metal fillings in the past which you feel are unsightly should you laugh or smile. Thus, these can be changed to white fillings, which will match your natural tooth colour and make the fillings almost invisible but still work as effectively.

Fuller Smile, Fuller Lips & Fuller Cheeks

If you are happy with your teeth but feel your smile still needs something extra, then you can undergo certain treatments which will involve the injection of Botulinum toxin into any lines or areas you wish to have fuller.

Common Smile Makeover Procedures:

Some of the most common smile makeover procedures are:

Porcelain Veneers

These are custom made porcelain shells for your teeth that are paper-thin. They can be made from other materials, but the most popular of them is porcelain. As they are custom made they can cover any gaps, unevenness, crookedness or chips in your teeth.

Dental Implants

These are normally a good idea if you have lost teeth or have severely damaged teeth. The implants will include metal rods, which will imitate the lost root and keep your new tooth in a fixed position.

Braces

Modern braces are comfortable to wear and are often made of a transparent material, so that they are not unsightly and many people will not notice you are wearing the brace. Braces work by progressively straightening your teeth. They are sometimes used alongside porcelain veneers.

Teeth Whitening

This is one of the most popular smile makeover treatments. Normally, the at home products do not contain high levels of peroxide which bleaches the teeth, but there can be some products that could severely damage your teeth and gums and you should always consult your dentist over recommended at-home kits. Equally, your dentist could conduct a scale and polish and then whiten your teeth in-house. This can significantly change the colouring of your teeth should you have stained/dark/yellow teeth. Some dentist whitening systems use laser procedures to whiten teeth.

Cosmetic Bonding

This involves covering the tooth in a material which is very similar to the tooth colour but is used to improve your natural tooth’s exterior appearance. However, it can also replace any bits of your teeth that you may have lost; for example, if you have chipped or damaged your tooth.
