Cosmetic dentistry is an increasingly popular industry which recognises that exterior well being can be just as important as internal dental health. Cosmetic dentistry refers to a number of recent innovations such as teeth whitening, veneers, gum-lifts and tooth reshaping. Whilst these won't always improve your oral health they will greatly influence the appearance of your teeth and can help you to feel more confident and happier with your appearance. Cosmetic dentistry procedures range from minimal dental procedures such as choosing alternative materials for fillings to extended procedures such as full mouth reconstructions. Although cosmetic dentistry has risen in popularity, all dentists agree that it is no replacement for a good regime of oral hygiene.
Smile Makeovers
If you're not happy with the colour, length or shape of your teeth then you might consider undergoing a smile makeover. Smile makeover is a catch-all term for one or more cosmetic dentistry treatments which aim to improve the appearance of your smile. There are a number of different treatments which can be used to create a smile makeover, depending on the needs of the patient.
Cosmetic Dentistry Options
Some people just want straightforward whitening whereas others may want to make their fillings appear more natural by having the amalgam material replaced with a tooth-coloured composite. Crooked teeth can be treated through the use of conventional orthodontic methods or by using state-of-the-art 'invisible' braces. Similarly, gaps between your teeth can often cause functional problems as well as being unsightly and can be corrected with the same treatments. Porcelain veneers can often be used for a quick fix but patients often need some of their natural tooth structure removing to make room for them. Broken or chipped teeth can be repaired using a range of treatments. Which one you opt for often depends on the extent of the damage to your teeth or how you would like to change the appearance of your teeth.
Common Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments
The most common treatments for chipped or broken teeth include veneers, dental crowns or cosmetic bonding. If any of your teeth are missing then dental restorations like dental bridges, dentures and implants are often recommended. If you feel your gums are too visible when smiling, then an easy fix can be provided through gum contouring, using either conventional surgical techniques or lasers. If your teeth are discoloured or stained, then teeth whitening or prophyflex cleaning can restore their natural whiteness. These are just some common cosmetic cosmetic dentistry treatments.
