In order for your dentist to complete any specialist treatments they need to have had training in the relevant areas.  This can be proven by a CCST certificate, and only dentists who hold the relevant training can call themselves a specialist. 

Examples of specializations include:


  • Pediatric dentistry – Dental treatments for young people
  • Oral Surgery – Surgical techniques for the mouth
  • Orthodontics – Correction or prevention of tooth irregularities
  • Periodontics – Treatment of gum problems
  • Endodontics – Treatment of disease or impact onto the dental roots or pulp
  • ProsthodonticsImplants, dental crowns and other fixtures to replace missing teeth
  • Restorative dentistry – Restoring problematic teeth so that they function properly
  • Dental public health – Prevention of disease and education of the public
  • Oral Medicine – Oral care of people with recurrent problems or disease which consistently affects the mouth
  • Oral Microbiology – Treatment of oral infections
  • Maxillofacial Pathology – Examination and treatment of damaged tissues due to disease in areas such as the salivary glands, deep cavities or tooth roots
  • Maxillofacial Radiology –Imaging of the jaw, teeth and surrounding areas
  • Special Care dentistry – Treating those who are impaired physically or mentally
