Pulp
Find UK Dentists »
The pulp is the part of the tooth that contains the nerve endings and blood vessels within the shell of the tooth under the dentin and enamel. The pulp is a soft material which helps to keep your tooth healthy. There are two main parts to the pulp:
Dental Pulp – This is the tissue within the roots
Coronal Pulp – The pulp located in the top, or dental crown, region of the tooth
The pulp contains the blood vessels which are essential to maintain a healthy tooth, without a good oxygen supply carried by blood your tooth would die. The nerves within the pulp are the reason you can feel through your teeth to a degree and can sometimes be sensitive to hot or cold foods. If the dental pulp is damaged or diseased then it is normally essential for you to have a root canal treatment performed.
