The Wand

The wand is a new form of anaesthetic giving device, focused on producing as little discomfort to the patient as possible. This makes the process of having pain relief applied much easier and is often used for patients who are nervous about needles.
Reasons for using The Wand
Many dental procedures involve the use of a local anaesthetic in order to numb the area about to be treated. For some people this can cause a problem as they are nervous of needles. The wand is a good alternative for people who cannot stand the use of needles, and can even help to eliminate needle phobias.
The Wand Procedure
It works by applying the anaesthetic very slowly. The needle is not the problem when you have injections and is too usually too small to cause any pain. The pain is usually caused by the anaesthetic being inserted too quickly. The wand monitors the application of the anaesthetic through a computer to ensure that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort.
The Wand – Advantages
- Better than a needle for reducing the amount of pain received when being given a local anaesthetic.
- Doesn’t have the appearance of a needle, so is better for those who have phobias. It actually looks like a pen rather than a needle.
- It is easier for your dentist to work with.
The Wand – Disadvantages
- More expensive than a normal injection
- Takes longer than a normal injection
- Sometimes seen as unnecessary as it produces the same result as a normal local anaesthetic injection.
- Difficult to find dentists who use the wand due to it being a very new technique.
