Mouth Guards for Sleeping Disorders & Snoring

Sleeping disorders can cause real health problems if left untreated and it might be necessary for you to be fitted with a mouth guard so that you can avoid the problems associated with sleep problems.  Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleeping problem that results in the tongue and soft tissues blocking the back of the throat while you sleep.  This means that for small periods of time during your sleep, you stop breathing.  This is obviously a problematic situation, and can lead to serious health issues such as:

  • Being very tired throughout the day
  • Increased risk for heart disease
  • Increased risk for stroke
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Mortality

Although other treatments are recommended for OSA such as ‘continuous positive airway pressure’, (this involves you wearing a mask and being attached to a machine while you sleep), doctors are now recommending oral fixtures and mouth guards to help.  Often people can’t cope with the CPPA treatments, it being quite uncomfortable and invasive.  A mouth guard can be worn to help with milder cases of OSA as well as helping with snoring

Mouth guards when worn at night can help by:

  • Opening the airways by repositioning the lower jaw
  • Stablising the tongue and other soft tissues

This will ensure that snoring will be reduced and you will encounter fewer problems as you sleep.
