Harley Street Dermal Fillers

Often used in conjunction with botox, dermal fillers are used to reduce wrinkles, frowns and other facial lines. Dermal filler treatment is also available for the lips. Their usage dates back to the 1890s when the patient’s own fat would be used as a filler in order to improve facial aesthetics. They consist of various materials, each producing a different effect, which can be injected into the dermis, the layer of skin beyond the epidermis. There are three main types of dermal filler: permanent, semi-permanent and biodegradable. Biodegradable fillers require repeat injections, much like botox treatment, but in Harley Street clinics semi-permanent and permanent fillers are not used due to the risks involved with such permanency.

Procedure

At a Harley Street clinic, the surgeon first explains to the patient the details of the procedure and all related effects. There must be agreement on which materials to be injected before the operation begins. Once both parties are ready to start, the surgeon applies local anaesthetic to the face. Next the filler is injected by tiny needles; this process usually takes between thirty and sixty minutes. The patient is then asked to relax while the fillers take effect on the face, and once the surgeon deems the procedure complete, the effects are immediately visible.

Risks

As Harley Street clinics do not offer the semi-permanent or permanent fillers, there is no danger of the patient suffering from the risks associated with these. In order to minimise the risk of an allergic reaction to the fillers, it may prove necessary for allergy tests prior to the operation – the surgeon will discuss this eventuality with the patient. There are some very rare side effects such as hardening around the affected area. Broadly speaking the biodegradable fillers dispose with such problems, however.

Advantages of Harley street dermal fillers

Harley Street clinics adhere to tried and tested materials – generally these are collagen and hyaluronic acid, both popular for their low-risk, high-result performance. Depending on the individual and the materials used, the patient will have to return every 3-12 months for repeat treatment. Prices are reasonable, generally starting around £150. In some cases it may transpire that other treatments are more effective; in this case the surgeon will offer these to the patient instead.
