Cranium

The cranium is the medical name for part of the skull.  It is a formation of thick bone which protects the brain and provides the underlying structure of some of the facial features.

In addition to the cranium, the skull also includes a section known as a mandible.

Trauma to the cranium, such as car-crash or sporting injuries, can result in brain damage.  Superficial damage to the soft tissues of the face can sometimes be improved by various cosmetic surgical procedures.
