Are Baby Scans Painful?

Ultrasound scans are not generally considered painful, although they may feel slightly uncomfortable when the sonographer applies pressure around the bladder, as most scans require a full bladder for the best results. The ultrasound gel, which is applied to the skin, may feel cold, but the procedure isn’t painful and there are no side-effects to worry about. It is understandable to feel nervous or worried about having a scan, especially if it is your first scan, you have had a miscarriage or you have had problems during pregnancy in the past; however, your sonographer will do everything they can to put your mind at ease and hopefully, you will find the scan a very relaxing and exciting experience.

Ultrasound scanning is non-invasive and you should leave your scan feeling absolutely fine with no unpleasant after effects to worry about.

Some people feel very nervous about going to hospital, even if they are having a procedure, such as an ultrasound scan, which is not painful; if you suffer from anxiety or you are very nervous, don’t hesitate to tell the members of staff; they will do their best to reassure you and help you to feel more relaxed.
