How Long Does A Baby Scan Take?

Private baby scans are usually fairly quick, but some types of scan make take slightly longer than others. Most scans take around 20-30 minutes; however, if your sonographer is struggling to get clear images because the baby is lying in an awkward position, the scan may take longer. A detailed scan usually takes around 30 minutes, while a gender scan may be completed within just 10-15 minutes if the baby is in a good position and the sex is clear.

Before your scan, your sonographer will explain what is going to happen and give you a brief description of what you can expect to see; during the scan, as they move the probe around, they will then give you more detail about the images you will be able to see on the screen.

When you go to your scan, you will be asked to arrive a little earlier than your scan appointment time, as this will give you time to prepare and for the sonographer to talk you through the process and answer any questions you have; you should also allow time after the scan just in case there are any findings, which need to be discussed or the scan needs to be extended to obtain better images. It’s generally best to allow for 15-20 minutes either side of the appointment time if you are booking taxis or arranging time off work.

If the sonographer is unable to get the images they need and moving around doesn’t help, it may be best to book another scan; your sonographer will discuss this with you.
