First Steps

If you are considering any form of cosmetic surgery, it is advisable to discuss this with your GP prior to consulting with your potential cosmetic surgeon.  You can get impartial advice and guidance as to what you best course of action may be.  Remember this is in an important decision for you, and honest unbiased advice at the outset can help you make a better, more informed decision.

Choosing Your Surgeon for Blepharoplasty

At first, it may seem bewildering; there are so many different options and surgical practices.  This is one reason why talking to your GP can be helpful – they can help narrow it down to a number of reputable surgeons in your area or within your budget.

If you decide to research your options on the internet, be very careful to check the accreditation of the surgeon.  Some sites may provide the opportunity to read personal testimonials from former patients; be realistic about the provenance of such sources.  It may be worth checking independent post-surgery discussion sites and forums to get an idea not only of the reality of the surgical procedure, but also how the surgeon-patient relationship functions, what you can realistically expect the final results to be, how to deal with any complications, and more.  You may potentially find recommendations for particular surgeons in this way.  If so, remember it is your responsibility to judge for yourself through a personal initial consultation.

Meeting With Your Surgeon

  • It is essential that you check your surgeon is qualified.
  • Check if they are listed on the Register of Plastic Surgery.  These records are held by the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Check if they are affiliated to a professional surgical group; for example, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).
  • Find out their experience with this specific procedure.  You should be able to see records of their results with prior patients ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of Blepharoplasty.

Always meet and discuss your goals and concerns face-to-face with your surgeon.
