Marvelon and Side Effects

Using the contraceptive pill can cause some unwanted side effects. These are a rare occurrence and if you do experience them, they usually disappear after the first few months of using Marvelon. There are a number of side effects that are more common than others but not everybody will experience them. If you experience any of the serious side effects, you must contact your doctor because they could be signs of other problems that could be fatal.

Some common side effects that are not usually serious can occur whilst using Marvelon. Changes in weight, vaginal bleeding, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting and headaches have all been reported whilst using the pill. You may also experience depression, breast discharge, discomfort when wearing of contact lenses, increased blood pressure, chloasma, chorea or systemic lupus erthematosus. If you have severe headaches, depression or heavy vaginal bleeding, tell your doctor immediately because it may be that Marvelon is not suitable for you.

If you experience any serious side effects, these should be reported to your doctor immediately. The pill has been linked to a couple of risks such as blood clotting problems and some cancers so if you experience any of the following side effects, these could be indications of underlying problems.

Signs of blood clots include shortness of breath, chest pains, leg pains, limb swelling, severe headaches, coughing for no reason or difficult breathing. Contact your doctor immediately. You must also check for lumps in your breast, changes in the breast area or dimpling of the skin, as these could be signs of breast cancer. Cervical cancer can also be a rare risk of the contraceptive pill so look out for bloody discharge, pelvic pain or pain during sex and report these to your doctor. If you have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Marvelon, it could be very dangerous so you need to tell your doctor if you have swelling of the tongue, mouth and face. On the rare occasion, the pill has been linked to severe liver diseases so any signs of jaundice or severe pain in the abdomen should be reported to your doctor.
