Pregnancy and Mercilon

If you are using the pill and you are pregnant, you must stop immediately. If you think that you may be pregnant, take a pregnancy test and do not stop taking the pill until you know that you are pregnant. If you are, you must not take Mercilon because it does not make the uterus a favorable place for the foetus to grow.

If you want to try for a baby, you can simply stop taking Mercilon. The pill is a reversible method of contraception so you just finish a cycle and stop taking the pill so that you can return to your normal cycle. It may take a couple of months for your periods to stabilize and return to normal but the pill should not have affected your fertility levels. It is best to wait until you have had a regular period so that you can tell your doctor when you last period was when you go for a checkup. This enables them to work out when your baby is due. However, it doesn’t matter if you get pregnant before this.

If you have just had a baby and are not breast-feeding, you can start using Mercilon 21 days after you have given birth. If you start on the 21st day, you will immediately be protected from pregnancy. You can start any time after this time frame but you will not be protected from pregnancy and you will need extra protection.  You can only start using the contraceptive pill if you are fully mobile and there were no complications with the birth because there is an increased risk of blood clots after having a baby.

If you want to breast feed, you should not use Mercilon. The levels of oestrogen in the pill will affect your milk production and you milk flow may decrease. Therefore, you may not produce a sufficient amount to solely feed your child. Also, some of the hormones can be passed through the milk and although adverse effects have not been reported, the effects of this are not known. You are advised to wait until your baby has been weaned off before you start using the pill and you should use another method of contraception in the mean time.
