How Does Qlaira Work?

This brand of contraceptive pill uses the same methods to prevent pregnancy as every other combined pill. It uses three mechanisms to reduce the chance of falling pregnant and it is the use of these that makes the pill so effective. If one fails, there are two more preventative methods to ensure you do not get pregnant. However, the pill is only effective if it is used correctly.

Every month, an egg is released from the ovaries, stimulated by the changing in hormone levels. The pill contains derivatives of these hormones and produces a constant flow into the blood stream. This tricks the body into thinking that it has already ovulated. As only one egg is released per month, no egg will actually be released and if there is no egg released, there is nothing for the sperm to fertilise. This is a very effective method of preventing pregnancy.

During the menstrual cycle, the body prepares for pregnancy. A fertilised egg will need to implant into the uterus wall in order to be effective. This can only happen if the wall is thick enough so the uterus wall thickens around the time of ovulation to give the egg the best possible chance of attachment. The pill has an opposite effect on the lining as it makes it thinner so that it is a lot harder for the egg to embed into the lining.

In order for fertilization to occur, the sperm must fertilise the egg. When the sperm are released, they need to traverse the entire womb to find the egg in the fallopian tube. This is quite a big task at hand and not many sperm make it. The pill makes this journey even harder by thickening the natural mucous that lines the neck of the womb. This becomes much more viscous and acts like a barrier because the sperm have great difficult in swimming through it.
