The National Health Service is a national institution that helps people to access medication and treatments for a wide variety of problems.  We often take the NHS for granted, but it is a major part of our society and allows people to seek help without having to pay or having to pay a minimal cost.  Certain medicines are available from the NHS for free, such as birth control pills and the morning after pill.  There are many ways to access this service, through your local GP, a walk-in clinic or GUM clinic or through the accident and emergency department of your nearest hospital.  The hospital really ought to be your last option, and seeing as the morning after pill is very widely available it ought to be avoided if necessary to allow others time with the doctor.

Your GP can provide you with the morning after pill, however sometimes getting an appointment can be difficult.  If you can see your GP within the next 2 days then this is the best place to get the morning after pill, alternatively you can also visit a GUM clinic, a family planning centre or walk in centres.  The morning after pill is completely free on the NHS, and any discussions that you have with a medical professional will be kept completely in confidence.

If you are getting the morning after pill through the NHS then it is likely that they will give you a prescription form that you can use within a GP’s dispensary or at a pharmacy.  You will not have to pay for this service, instead you can access the pill by handing over the form.  You may have to wait a few minutes depending on how busy the pharmacy or dispensary is.
