Qualifications of a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Surgeon
It is very important that you choose your surgeon wisely. Cosmetic surgeons need to be highly skilled in anatomy, physiology and pathology and have taken post-residency training courses and exams in order to be allowed to practise cosmetic surgery. In order for a surgeon to perform any kind of plastic surgery they must be a certified physician, and have had training in a range of cosmetic procedures in order to be affiliated with certain professional groups. They often specialise, branching off in order to become an expert in one specific form of cosmetic surgery. It would be beneficial, therefore, for the surgeon that you choose to be an expert in abdominoplasty. There are different associations and affiliations that surgeons can achieve, and it is these that really separate them. Most surgeons within the UK will be affiliated to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, (FRCS), and have FRCS (plast) after their name to indicate their training within the cosmetic surgery sphere. Another abbreviation to look out for is BAPRAS, (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic surgeons), which would indicate that you surgeon has passed rigorous examinations in order to be associated with such a group.
The Importance of checking a Surgeons’ Credentials
Unfortunately there have been instances where cosmetic procedures have gone wrong, due to a surgeons’ lack of training or incompetence. It would be a good idea to speak to someone who has already had surgery at the clinic you are considering as well as thoroughly checking the qualifications and training that your surgeon has received. There has been better regulation within the cosmetic surgery industry in recent years, however, so it is more than likely that your surgeon will be fit to practise.
