Bikini Laser Hair Removal

The profile of the bikini line has been increasing steadily over the last decade as celebrities wax lyrical about ‘Brazilians’, and mere mortals are increasingly following suit.  As a woman grows older, the area that pubic hair covers can expand, leading to embarrassing instances in swimming costumes and changing rooms.  Some women may feel self-conscious with their partners if they feel excessively ‘hairy down there’: there is some sense of appearing less feminine with abundant pubic hair.

However, considerations for bikini line laser hair removal are far from solely cosmetic and aesthetic.  Many women experience problems such as folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles), infections such as thrush, ingrowing hairs and embarrassing odours caused by natural discharge of fluids being caught in the hair.  Various other depilatory treatments in the bikini area can actually exacerbate these conditions; laser hair removal is the only current treatment that can actively rectify and cure such problems.

An intriguing side effect reported by some women is an increased sensitivity during sexual activity.  There are also beneficial considerations such as a decreased susceptibility to some sexually transmitted infections, such as pubic lice, or genital herpes or warts.  All in all, unlike the purely cosmetic aspects of laser hair removal on other parts of the body, this treatment on the bikini region can have genuine medical benefits.

As with all laser hair removal surgery, your individual needs will be affected by thickness and type of hair, skin colour and other considerations.  However, generally speaking, laser hair removal in the bikini area is relatively quick, as the area being treated is relatively small: the length of each treatment is usually between 10-30 minutes, depending on the individual.  You may need 6-12 treatments overall to realise the full effects.
