Types of Brow Lift Surgery

There are many types of brow lift surgery and the option that you choose will depend on a number of factors. Your desired goals from the treatment will help determine which type to go with, the condition of your skin may mean that certain treatments work better than others and your surgeon may specialise in a certain method. In some cases, going for the classic surgery will be the best option but in many cases surgeons prefer to combine techniques to cater for the individual. They will discuss this with you during the consultation and take you through each option, explaining their advantages and disadvantages. The surgeon will also look at your face structure to see which type of brow lift surgery would suit your complexion. They look at this on different patients every day so pay attention and carefully consider the advice they give you.

The three types of brow lift are classic or coronal forehead lift, endoscopic forehead lift and temporal lift. For all procedures you will be under some form of anaesthesia so that you do not feel any pain whilst the surgeon is operating.

Coronal Forehead Lift or Mid-forehead Brow Lift

For this method, you will need to be under general anaesthesia and the procedure will last around 2 hours. The surgeon begins by making an incision on your face that will be at around ear level. They will then follow this into the forehead and down near the ear on the other side of your face. Once the cut is made, the surgeon will lift up your skin and remove any excess fat and tissue. They will then adjust the muscles if needed and place the skin back down. This may be at a higher level than before, lifting the eyebrows up slightly. Once in place, any excess skin will be trimmed off. Whilst this technique may seem more drastic than newer methods, it can leave you with longer lasting results and a smoother forehead.

How close the incisions are to your hairline will depend on your individual case. Many patients prefer to have the incision go along the hairline to reduce any bruising that may be visible. With the incision being made at the hairline, you may even be able to have your hairline moved forward. This can create a more youthful look if this is what you are looking to achieve. This method is ideal for people that have fringes and large foreheads.

Endoscopic Forehead Lift

This procedure is slightly more advanced and quicker (taking between 1 and 2 hours). It involves making small incisions in the skin beneath the hair. This can be done under local or general anaesthesia. Fibre Optic equipment is then used to lift the tissue above the eyebrows, elevating the eyebrows. Your surgeon will operate the equipment from a computer externally and there will be a tiny camera placed within the hair so they can see where to make the incisions. With this procedure, recovery time is generally faster, there is less pain and there is minimal bruising as smaller incisions are made. Furthermore, because the incisions are made within the hairline, any bruising that does come up will be less visible than with the classic approach. This means that you can walk out of the clinic looking great with your new eyebrows. This option is best for those in their early 30s who still have relatively smooth skin. This is because the procedure won’t pull the skin as much as the coronal method.

Temporal Lift

The temporal lift is done under local anaesthesia so you will be awake during the process and it does not need to be performed in the operating theatre. It is similar to the endoscopic lift but results are more subtle as it only covers the outer thirds of the eyebrows. By lifting this proportion of the eye, you are left with a more attractive look and if this is what you are hoping to achieve, let your surgeon know in the consultation. The procedure itself is just one hour long and having only used local anaesthetic, you can go about your daily life as normal afterwards. This means that recovery time for this process is the fastest, normally around 10 to 14 days, and you will experience minimal discomfort.

Fusion of techniques

Some surgeons prefer to use a mixture of the coronal technique and the endoscopic technique.  This is known as the endo-coronal brow lift. With this technique, a long incision is made within the hairline so you don’t have any visible bruising or scarring, leaving you with a fresh, youthful look. However, the use of this technique will mean that you lose a strip of hair and your hairline will be slightly pushed back. If you would prefer not to have your hair affected, this may not be the best option for you. For those experiencing chronic baldness and don’t want to risk losing any hair, you may want to consider the other techniques. On the other hand, if you have thick hair or fringe covering parts of your forehead, this technique might provide the best results.

Transblepharoplasty

Transblepharoplasty involves placing an implant inside an incision in the upper eyelid. This is then drilled into the bone, lifting the eyebrow. This procedure requires just local anaesthesia and the operation can take up to two hours.
