Fortunately with breast lift surgery, major complications are extremely rare when the procedure is performed efficiently and competently. However, it is important to be aware of any possible risks and your surgeon should ensure that you are making an informed decision before agreeing to operate.

Some of the potential risks involved with breast lift surgery are as follows:

  • Bleeding
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Reaction to anaesthesia
  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Varying nipple positioning/height
  • Permanent or temporary loss of sensation in nipples
  • Not being able to breastfeed
  • Internal bruising/haematoma
  • Deep vein thrombosis in very rare cases
  • Keloids or poor healing

It is also common after a general anaesthetic to feel slightly nauseous and you will feel some soreness and bruising following any surgery. You will of course be left with scarring although the extensiveness of this depends upon the type of procedure and technique and how well you look after yourself post surgery and if course your own skin type.

In some cases, ‘reversionary’ surgery can be used to correct procedures for example, when incisions have not healed well or to correct asymmetry. There are certainly things that you can do to reduce the amount or risk involved too. It is important that you follow the before and after advice from your surgeon on how to properly care for yourself while healing. If there are any other specific risks to you, your surgeon will make you aware of them.
