Juvederm is a gel based on hyaluronic acid, which is a natural chemical found in most organic tissue and the body produces it naturally in the skin. After the age of 25 the body begins to produce less of this chemical. Hyaluronic acid is produced by fermenting certain bacteria in extremely sterile and carefully monitored conditions, and it works as a treatment by encouraging the skin too retain water and plumping, smoothing and tightening the treated area. Juvederm uses Hylacross technology, which they claim creates a smooth consistency to their product and they also combine the gel with lidocaine to reduce any discomfort during application. Lidocaine is a commonly used local anaesthetic, with antiarrhythmic properties (it suppresses fast heart rhythms) and its presence in Juvederm will numb pain during the treatment. Treatment consists of a number of small injections just under the skin, using an ultra-fine needle. There are two products available from this company: Juvederm and Juvederm Ultra, and they were released in the UK in 2008. Juvederm is produced by Californian cosmetic company Allergan.
