Will My Dentures Last Forever?

Providing you care for them and clean them regularly, dentures can, theoretically, last for over thirty years. However, it is recommended that you get a new pair every 5 years or so. Your dentist will check them for signs of ageing at your check-ups (the denture on your lower teeth is generally the one which begins to age first). The dentures may need re-fitting as you grow older, as we age, our gums tend to shrink, which can result in dentures needing to be adjusted so as to still be comfortable. People with no teeth loose ½ mm of jawbone height every year, meaning that dentures will need constant check-ups so as to feel comfortable inside your mouth. If left unchanged, loose dentures can cause gum sores, which can lead to infection.
