Dentures & the Importance of Oral Hygiene

Poor oral hygiene is a major cause of tooth decay. Failure to brush your teeth or floss, or poor brushing technique can lead to a build up of dental plaque.  Plaque is a barely visible substance that sticks to your teeth and gums. It attacks teeth and gums with acid it produces and it thrives on the bacteria built up by not brushing away the residue from sugary foods and drinks. This weakens the tooth enamel which can lead to a heightened tooth sensitivity (because the nerve at the centre of the tooth has less protections) and tooth decay. Plaque is the main cause of cavities and gum disease, both of which lead to missing teeth. Dentures can replace these but you will need to take care of your dentures better than you took care of your original teeth if you want them to last and retain their appearance.
