Preparing for Liposuction

Like other forms of cosmetic surgery, liposuction does require some form of preparation in order to ensure a smooth procedure.  Before having liposuction you will need to:

  • Stop taking certain medications such as aspirin or even some herbal treatments, as advised by your liposuction surgeon.
  • Quit smoking up to two weeks beforehand or as advised.
  • Prepare painkillers and anti-inflammatory for the first few days after liposuction.
  • Book time necessary off work and find someone to help you home from the surgery and with household tasks for the first few days.
  • Be properly informed and aware of the liposuction procedure and how best to aid your recovery.
  • Inform your surgeon of any illness that you might experience.  These may not pose any serious threat but it is essential that your surgeon know about them so as to reduce the risks involved with liposuction.
  • Have another consultation if you happen to gain or lose weight between your initial consultation and the actual liposuction surgery.  Your shape is likely to change if this occurs and your surgeon will need to make changes to their approach.

Your surgeon will provide you with all the information that you will need to prepare for your surgery.  With more dramatic and invasive liposuction procedures you may have to be prepared for a stay in hospital and a longer recovery time, whereas for smaller, more fine tuned liposuction/liposelection it is unlikely that you will need to take much time off and will be able to go home hours after the surgery has finished.
