Power assisted liposuction is a type of liposuction that uses specific tools in order to better break down fat cells and deposits.  A normal liposuction cannula (suction tool) is quite a limited tool, and it can be hard to remove all fat cells or to shape the surgery using one alone.  In order to overcome these limitations surgeons can use a variety of different tools attached to a cannula to help further break down fat cells and ensure their easy removal.  Different tools can enable greater control over the amount of fat and the direction and shape this fat is being removed from.

The additional appliances used transmit small vibrations that help to detach and break down fat cells.  As well as the vibrations created by the additional tools used in PAL, injections are used to prepare the area being treated.  These injections are designed to allow the greater ease of fat cell break down and removal.  PAL is therefore a ‘wet’ liposuction technique, used in conjunction with ‘tumescent’ liposuction.  This refers to the injections used and the application of certain fluids into the areas being treated.
