Erectile Dysfunction & Stress

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological reasons and stress is the main cause in this category. To have stress induced erectile dysfunction you do not need to be medically depressed, as worrying about money, relationship problems or even work can be enough to lead to erectile problems. Stress may only cause erectile dysfunction once or it could affect your sex life for a long period of time. Stress can be a vicious circle as if you get stressed you are more likely to have erectile dysfunction, but yet the more this happens the more stress will be caused and this is then repeated. This is more commonly known as ‘performance anxiety’. Therefore it is extremely important to seek help and not to be embarrassed to approach the subject with your partner and your GP.

Symptoms of Stress

Here are some the main symptoms of stress that you should look out for;

  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite or comfort overeating
  • Tiredness
  • Skin problems
  • Migraines
  • Not being able to concentrate

The Best Ways to Beat Stress

There are some simple things that you can do to be able to try and get a hold on your stress. The first thing is to find out why you are stressed. Ask yourself have you had bereavement that could be affecting you or is your job to high pressured? By finding out the causes of your stress you can then think about how to treat it.

If you have suffered from stress over a long period of time it may be best to seek help from a psychotherapist, but if your stress is a relatively new thing in your life then the tips below could help you reduce it;

  • Going for a short walk or taking part in gentle exercise
  • Being outside as much as possible as the sun can really help alleviate stress
  • Breathing exercises
  • Taking an hour a day to relax and to something for you such as reading
  • Having a job can add to stress but they are generally a positive way of meeting new people and giving a purpose to your day

If the stress continues and it begins to affect your everyday life such as causing erectile dysfunction then medication is available from your GP. Medication is a good way of treating stress on the short term, but on a long term basis the medication can do more harm than good. This is because many people can find it addictive and rely on the medication to ensure that they are happy rather than solving the cause of stress to begin with.
